How US Betting Markets Adapted Post World Cup

Okay, so the World Cup is over, Spain’s got the trophy, and the confetti’s been swept up. But if you were anywhere near a sportsbook app this summer, you probably noticed something: this wasn’t just another tournament. It was five weeks that low-key reshaped how American betting apps work, and honestly, some of that change is still shaking out.

Let’s dig into what actually happened, why it happened, and — the part I think matters most — who really came out ahead here.

Why did any of this even change?

Simple answer: this World Cup was just… a lot. 48 teams instead of 32, 104 matches instead of 64, and for the first time in forever, kickoffs actually happened at reasonable hours for US fans instead of that dreaded 6 a.m. group-stage slog. Throw in the fact that legal mobile betting is now live in around 39 states (up from roughly 30 last cycle), and you’ve basically got a perfect storm for volume. DraftKings said their World Cup bet count jumped 650% compared to 2022. Six hundred and fifty percent. That’s not a “nice tournament, glad we ran it” number — that’s a “we need to rebuild half our product” number.

So that’s exactly what happened. Sportsbooks didn’t just sit back and count the money — they scrambled to make the whole experience feel less like a bolted-on side hustle and more like the main event. DraftKings, for example, rolled out full Spanish-language support — onboarding, odds boards, promos, customer service, all of it — and their Spanish-language soccer customers jumped 250% during the tournament. Live betting got faster and deeper too, since soccer’s slow-burn pace practically begs for constant in-play wagers on corners, cards, next goal, all that stuff. And with football season creeping up fast, that same engine is already warming up — go see today’s NFL betting lines here on most major apps and you’ll notice the odds move quicker and the parlay builders feel a lot more polished than they did last year.

And it didn’t stop at soccer

Here’s the part people don’t always clock: once these upgrades proved themselves during the World Cup, they didn’t just get shelved when the final whistle blew. Books kept the improved live-betting engines and beefed-up parlay builders running straight into other sports — NBA summer league, MLB’s stretch run, even early NFL preseason markets picked up the same polish. Football season’s basically here now, and the live-odds updates and parlay tools across most apps feel noticeably sharper than they did a year ago. That’s the World Cup’s fingerprints, still on the product.

Probably the wildest sub-plot, though, is what happened with prediction markets. Platforms like Kalshi went from about 9% of US sports-betting volume at the start of the year to a jaw-dropping 27% during the World Cup. That’s a real shift in where money’s flowing, and it’s put genuine pressure on traditional sportsbooks to move faster and price sharper, since prediction markets aren’t boxed in by the same regulatory setup.

Okay, but is any of this actually good for us?

There’s a decent argument that bettors won something here. More language support, quicker live odds, richer parlay menus, and a scrappy new competitor in prediction markets — all of that tends to push books toward treating casual, less-experienced bettors better instead of as an afterthought. The engagement numbers back it up too: interest spiked hard during the tournament, which says people genuinely liked what they were getting, even if a lot of that enthusiasm cooled off once the trophy got handed out.

But — and this is a real “but” — not everyone’s getting the same deal. A bunch of states saw this as their moment to raise betting taxes, with some now taking more than half of operator revenue. When a sportsbook’s handing over that much to the state, it’s got a lot less room to offer good odds or juicy promos. So depending on which state you’re betting from, you might be getting a genuinely better product now, or you might just be getting the same old lines with a shinier app around them.

So… who’s really winning here?

If I’m being straight with you: the companies are winning more than we are. The World Cup was basically a massive, cheap way to bring in new customers — something like 563,000 new sportsbook accounts opened during the tournament — and now operators have all of those people’s habits, payment details, and betting patterns locked in for the NFL, NBA, and March Madness seasons still to come. The upgrades are real and they do help users day to day. But let’s not kid ourselves about why they got built — it wasn’t out of the goodness of anyone’s heart, it was to turn a month of World Cup curiosity into a year of steady betting activity. Not evil, just business. Just worth remembering next time your app hits you with a shiny “new features” notification.
