The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max have a six-month gap between their launch dates – the Ultra launched later, but does it automatically mean it’s better than the six-month-old iPhone 17 Pro Max?
Well, I have been keeping them in my pockets for a couple of days now, so I have plenty of experience using them. I can safely say that the six-month gap isn’t significant enough to foster a huge difference between these two smartphones. Nonetheless, there are some interesting variations between them that we need to discuss.
For example, the Ultra has a new privacy display, while the iPhone has a new selfie camera. Will that be able to make a difference in your life? To answer that, we need to get into the details. So, let’s cut to the chase and talk about the details.
The Display Comparison: S26 Ultra is Better
Starting with the most notable feature of both – the display.
The S26 Ultra and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are both pretty big phones, and the major reason behind this size is the display size. They both are 6.9 inches, and that’s massive.
If they had to be categorized in 2015, they’d for sure be in the category of tablets because only tablets were this big back then. But anyway, yes, we have phones with huge displays.
With that said, how do they feel in real life? If I had to answer it with one word, I’d say it is great.
Why am I saying that? Well, they both are LTPO AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate, they both get bright enough for easy outdoor usage, and they both are sharp with great pixel density.
However, there are some differences that are worth noticing.
For example, when I am streaming my favorite shows in 4K on my high-speed Spectrum Internet, the sharper display of the Galaxy S26 Ultra is evident. I am not saying that the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s display is a bad one. I mean, those extra pixels in the S26 Ultra do make a difference.
On the flip side, the iPhone comes with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support. But it doesn’t make it any better than the S26 Ultra (if I am to be honest). Samsung is still the best when it comes to the display. Their AMOLED technology, which they use only in their flagship phones, is ahead of its time. I have been using both the S26 Ultra and the iPhone 17 Pro Max as my daily drivers; however, I am mostly consuming content on the S26 Ultra.
There is something so good that I keep coming back to it to watch more and more content.
Then there is the privacy display that is unique to the S26 Ultra for now. You don’t have to use a privacy glass that blocks the screen from just one angle. The privacy display feature, when turned on, blocks from all the peeping angles. On top of that, you can select the area of the screen you want to block peeping from.
All in all, the S26 Ultra wins in the display department.
The Software Comparison: The iPhone 17 Pro Max is Better
I know, I know that some readers are of the view that I am comparing Apples to Oranges. I understand the point, but there might be some who are open to joining either ecosystem. So, this is for them.
Anyway, when you use Samsung, it’d be straight up infused with AI. You will have a call translating feature, a circle to search, a Gemini-powered Google Assistant, and more of that stuff. The most useful of the bunch is the Gemini-powered assistant.
Why am I saying that?
Well, I rarely have to use my hands when I am busy preparing meals, cleaning my home, or doing laundry. The other day, it was the last day to pay my internet bill. Before I could have forgotten this chore, while I was doing laundry, I asked the Gemini-powered assistant to call Spectrum customer service. It did, and I quickly paid my internet bill without even touching my phone.
So, it is helpful.
On the flip side, the iPhone didn’t have such features because its Apple Intelligence was lacking. Then they asked Google to help them out, and so far, it’s been good. On top of that, Apple’s software has always been great. Their ecosystem and software compatibility with the rest of the devices in the ecosystem are fantastic. You can connect your Mac to your iPhone, your iPhone to your smartwatch, smoothly, and this has not been replicated.
So, in the software department, I give it to Apple.
The Performance Comparison: The iPhone 17 Pro Max is Better
iPhone 17 Pro Max is powered by the Apple A19 Pro chipset, whereas the Samsung is powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (weird name though). iPhone comes with one RAM option, which is 12 gigs. S26 Ultra can be expanded to 16 gigs.
Enough of the spec talk, how do they actually perform in reality?
Well, the short answer is that the iPhone is still better than any smartphone currently on the market when it comes to performance. But that doesn’t mean the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is bad by any means. It is just that the iPhone is better.
The major difference was in the raw power. Apple makes in-house chipsets, and they are best at what they do. That’s why the Apple A19 Pro is the most powerful chipset when it comes to raw numbers in the market. Not that it is just raw power, it is translated to the gaming experience as well. I play CODM, Clash of Clans, and Need for Speed on my phone, and the iPhone is better than the Samsung.
I should mention here that I had to pixel-peep to notice this difference. I mean, I was watching every frame rate drop, lag, and even the slightest difference. To an average consumer, this might not be visible.
So, if you are that pixel-peeping person and you need the ultimate best performance, iPhone 17 Pro Max is your best bet.
The Camera Comparison: It’s a Tie
I need a separate full article to talk just about the camera because there are so many details, but let me try to briefly explain the things you should know before making a purchase decision.
The Ultra has a quad camera setup at the back with a 200MP main shooter, 50MP ultrawide lens, 50MP periscope lens, and another 10MP optical zoom lens.
On the flip side, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has three 48MP lenses: ultrawide, main, and a telephoto lens.
How do they compare with each other? I will start with photos.
The iPhone was better, particularly in portrait photos. My standard to compare photos is how close they look to reality, and photos from the iPhone were that. However, the S26 Ultra is great when it comes to making videos. Quality appears close to reality, and the super steady mode is also helpful, especially when making videos of children and pets.
So, if you need a phone that is better in photography, it is the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and for videography, it is the S26 Ultra.
The Price Comparison: The iPhone 17 Pro Max is Better (for now)
Last but not least, the most important factor should be addressed duly. So, here you go:
As I write this in March, 2026, there might be a discount available on the iPhone 17 Pro Max because it is a few months old. The S26 Ultra has just been launched recently, so the discounts on it are scarce.
Anyway, there isn’t much difference between the two, so you have to evaluate based on the other factors I have mentioned across this content piece to make a sane purchase decision.
