People have obviously had a lot of fun pointing out plot twists from The Matrix Online that may impact the upcoming film, such as the fact that Morpheus was murdered by an assassin very early on in the game. Much of this has been accompanied by jokes about how the game was supposed to be a canonical continuation of the film plotlines. However, a recent interview with Ben Chamberlain, the game’s last lone developer, published by Eurogamer, may dispel that notion:
I don’t believe we ever considered whether or not our game was canon. I don’t believe anybody involved with the project ever imagined that anything we did would be considered canonical in the same way that the movies were. That would have struck me as ludicrous. With different writers, a different audience, a different goal, mechanics – everything – it was obviously a different entity. Nothing we produced as developers was ever intended to be recognized or taken seriously by the general audience; that’s simply not how game stories were viewed.
Chamberlain describes what it was like to work on a project with the history of MXO, including receiving a sneak look at the plots for the second and third films, the difficulties of continuing the game’s narrative, and the emotional effect of the game’s ultimate shutdown. If you’re interested in the history of the game, it’s a fascinating conversation to listen to, but if you’re hoping for fresh information about the forthcoming film, Chamberlain is just as clueless as the rest of us. However, he does not seem to believe it will intersect with MXO’s tales.
