One of the great American musicals, West Side Story premiered on Broadway in 1957 and received ten Tony Awards. Now, more than 100 years after its birth, it’s back with a new adaptation. This time around it will be directed by Michael Mayer who has previously worked with popular directors such as Peter Jackson, Stephen Daldry and Baz Luhrmann.
The “west side story 2021” is a musical that was released in 1957. It tells the story of two young men who fall in love with the same woman, and one of them tries to kill her husband. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won 8.
In its first weekend, Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story will take the top spot at the box office. Despite strong critical analysis, the film’s box office performance isn’t very impressive. On its first day at the box office, West Side Story grossed $4.1 million. With a revenue of $10.5 million, it will finish off its first weekend. The new film’s disappointing beginning follows a trend among musicals released in 2021. In the Heights, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, grossed just $11.5 million in its first weekend. Dear Evan Hansen, which earned $7.5 million in its first weekend, likewise underwhelmed.
The bigger ramifications of West Side Story’s opening weekend are causing some alarm. Some speculate that it is an indication of yet another box office slump owing to concerns over COVID-19’s omicron version. With Spider-Man: No Way Home releasing on December 17th, it becomes doubtful that it will last another week. For its debut weekend, the capstone to Marvel Studios’ original Spider-Man trilogy rocked websites with pre-sales. We can’t tell whether the omicron news has muted that excitement just yet. The Matrix Resurrections hits cinemas the following week, but its simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max already makes predicting what to expect from the highly anticipated sequel difficult.
Encanto, a Disney film that has topped the box office for the previous two weeks, has dropped to second place on the ranking. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, House of Gucci, and Eternals (which will soon be available to watch on Disney+) make out the top five films of the weekend. Continue reading to view the entire list of this weekend’s top ten box office hits.
