Drag and drop may be coming back on Windows 11’s taskbar

The Windows taskbar is going through a major overhaul in the upcoming Windows 11 update. One of the biggest changes is that drag and drop will be returning to the taskbar, which Microsoft hopes will make it easier for people to access their most used programs.

Windows 11 has been in development for a while now. The new operating system is set to come out soon, but some users are worried that drag and drop will not be returning.

  • Developers should bring back all taskbar functions, which is one of the most desired improvements for Windows 11.
  • However, Microsoft just received a fresh Feedback Hub article that received over 20,000 upvotes.
  • Officials from Redmond have only given a basic answer to the topic thus far, with no guarantees.
  • More features and limitations will be added to the new OS, so make sure you stay up to date on everything.

For a long time, Windows enabled users to move the taskbar around, allowing them to pin it to whatever side of the screen they wanted.

However, with the release of Windows 11, we’ve been forced to use the taskbar at the bottom of the screen since Microsoft eliminated the ability to shift it to the sides or the top and replaced it with XAML.

This new taskbar is an intentional design decision by Redmond, and it provides a contemporary experience, such as compatibility with the new system tray, but it comes with a number of drawbacks.

Microsoft employees have stated in a Feedback Hub article that dragging a file onto an app on the taskbar to launch it in that app is not a supported scenario.

However, we can see that Microsoft is paying attention to user criticism, and we anticipate the feature to return in Windows 11 version 22H2 (October 2022 Update).

The taskbar in Windows 11 is going to become a lot more user-friendly.

The removal of the option to move the taskbar did not sit well with users, and the above-mentioned Feedback Hub post now has over 20,000 upvotes, with individuals requesting that the ability to move the taskbar to the sides of the top be restored.

Users on the Feedback Hub say they won’t switch to Windows 11 until Microsoft provides the functionality since the taskbar’s placement is critical to their daily routine.

For the time being, Microsoft has just responded to the thread with a generic statement, offering no guarantees or assurances.

We’ll keep improving Windows 11 and its features based on comments like this, so thank you for taking the time to let us know what you think!

Developers are testing with a new functionality in Build 22458 that would enable users to drag and drop files/folders onto a taskbar program like Registry editor.

Similarly, we’ll soon be able to drag and drop folders onto a taskbar program and have them open in that app. This is not supported in the current Windows 11 21H2 22000.xxx versions.

Since we were talking about the restrictions that the new and better taskbar placed on everyone who was testing the future OS, here’s a quick rundown of everything we’re missing right now:

  • The drag-and-drop functionality is no longer available.
  • The taskbar is positioned at the bottom of the screen.
  • The taskbar clock seconds is no longer supported.
  • You can no longer access tools like Task Manager from the right-click menu.
  • The calendar flyout in Windows 11 is no longer integrated with events.
  • You can’t ungroup items/apps on the modern taskbar.

Unfortunately, on October 5, Windows 11 will come with these taskbar restrictions; however, it will be available as an optional upgrade, so you may avoid it and instead get Windows 10 October 2021 Update.

If you update, you may still use third-party commercial applications or open-source solutions to restore the old taskbar experience.

StartIsBack, a popular Start menu replacement for the new operating system, is one example.

This application restores the traditional taskbar style and allows you to reposition it, as well as restore the original system tray from earlier Windows editions.

But that’s not all: according to the official literature, Windows 11 will also eliminate Windows Timeline integration and Cortana from the initial boot experience.

The desktop wallpaper cannot be synchronized across devices, and Live Tiles are no longer accessible as part of the new Start, according to Redmond officials.

So, for those of us who are waiting for news on the taskbar, this is all we have for the time being. Full we have to do now is wait and see whether Microsoft will satisfy everyone by restoring all functionality.

What are your thoughts on the whole system overhaul and its limitations? Let us know what you think in the comments area below.
